Visit to Carlisle Library



On the 21st November, Year 4 visited Carlisle Library where Stephen White talked to us about what it was like to live in Upperby 200 years ago. He showed us pictures of Upperby School going back in time, when Upperby was a village.



 We were given copies of maps showing where the mills were located in 1811 and also copies of the newspaper then, The Carlisle Patriot.






 After Stephen’s talk we visited the children’s area of the library, where we found out how to join the library and its services.


We also took part in a quiz based on books available to loan from the library, which was fun.

Stead McAlpin, Cummersdale This week 30th January,  Ros Downing was due to visit us and give us a talk on the history of Stead McAlpin printworks in Cummersdale but unfortunately had to cancel due to illness. Although not in as much detail as Ros could have told us, we looked at the history of Stead McAlpin who have had a factory at Cummersdale since 1835 and is the only surviving print works in Carlisle and the most versatile print maker in the UK, using rotary, flatbed and digital printmaking. We talked about what life would have been like as a print worker in the 1800s.  The factory would have been unheated, the only light coming from candles stuck into blocks of wood hanging from the roof.  Many bleaching and dyeing processes involved harsh chemicals and unpleasant substances - lime and dung for instance.  Working conditions would have been harsh for unskilled workers and a long apprenticeship would have to be served to become a printer, who were the el...

The Journey of Cotton to Carlisle's Cotton Mills - The Trade Triangle - 1st May, 2019

raw cotton Cotton comes from a plant which is grown in a hot climate.  Today we traced its journey from the Americas in 18th century to Britain and in particular to the Port of Whitehaven. We learned that Whitehaven, once a small fishing port, had been developed by the Lowther family into busy shipping port, exporting coal from the Lowther's mines to Ireland.  During the 1700s Whitehaven became a major trading port, its tobacco trade being only second to London. Whitehaven Harbour 1700 This map shows what was traded from Britain during this time, in particular Liverpool, Whitehaven and Bristol - described as the trading triangle. This showed that ships sailed from Britain loaded with textiles, firearms, weapons, gunpowder and metal goods to trade with dealers in West African countries. Life as a Carlisle Weaver in the 1800s

In October, we learned about what life was like as a Carlisle weaver in the 1800s.  One in four people were employed in the weaving industry and a third of them were children.  Stephen White, historian from Carlisle Library told us that children from seven years old worked in the local mills. They were cheap to employ and as they were small, were sent under the machines, whilst they were still running, to clean, tie yarn and make repairs.  It was hard dangerous work for all in noisy, dusty conditions.  Only wealthy children went regularly to school (not made compulsory until 1880 for 5 - 12 year olds).  Charity schools and Sunday schools taught children how to read, knit and sew however.
